Do you remember the moment that you realized you had another name besides your first? And that everyone in your hose had that name? I don’t. But I remember when my little brother came to this realization and wanted to be called by his full name, first and last… and also my son, and now my daughter.
There is allot of glue in that last name, that can just be sticky, or hold a guy by his helmet to a celling fan.
There is naturally a great pride in a child that he/she is apart of a tribe, like no other tribe, something greater than him/her self.
There is naturally a great pride in a child that he/she is apart of a tribe, like no other tribe, something greater than him/her self. This is born in us we spend our whole lives trying to find this community on blogs and networks, softball teams, cults.
Leverage that power.. and if your kids are older, it’s not to late because they have the same need, even more so, to find their place in the tribe. Make it know that they are a “Berkans” or a “brown.” When you speak of how they should act, it’s more directed at how a “Berkans” should act, a “Lewis” should act… how this tribe works.
It came natural to me, because I didn’t like what was out there, the words commonly used to correct and encourage kids. And it turned out that this is kind of a big deal to my kids now they are proud to apart of “our” clan… and they know we are different than other “clans” who let their kids run around like their the tail wag’n the dog. I’ll use “Macky” for my last name, because I always like that name… (it snaps). So, I’ll say, “son, you know thats not how a Macky acts,” or, ” Macky’s always pick up their dishes.” and so on.. Your older kids will think your funny at first, but most will have a secret pride when you slam a hoop “Macky style”.
When you speak of “good boys” and “good girls” your doing nothing but building a great capacity for your children to judge others in the typical American fashion.

But when you say Macky boys and Macky Girls your telling them that there are rules that they need to obey, because your apart of this larger tribe and what you do matters to the safety, organization and all around happiness of the tribe.
So good luck this Macky boy needs to go to sleep, because Macky boys go to sleep around 1am so Mrs. Macky doesn’t kick Macky butt.
